About the Company
Hyundai Construction Equipment is a subsidiary of Hyundai Heavy Industries Group that began its heavy machinery business in 1985 and is a comprehensive construction equipment specialist that manufactures various construction equipment and industrial vehicles.
It operates a dealer network of 540 dealers in 140 countries and produces approximately 50,000 construction equipment and industrial vehicles annually.
Hi MATE is a comprehensive construction equipment management system that Hyundai Construction Equipment developed in-house in 2008.
The Challenge
Combining smart manufacturing and services
Hyundai Construction Equipment was seeking ways to overcome the limitations of traditional services in response to customer expectations and changes in the digital environment through the Hi MATE service, which it has been developing and operating since 2008. After migrating infrastructure to the Cloud, the company considered evolving to a Cloud-native environment to manage IoT terminal devices, improve the convenience of IoT data usage, establish a data-driven business culture, and advance smart services.
Amazon Web Services
The evolution of Hi MATE service begins with construction equipment, or devices.
With increasing product demand, we were able to create a stable operating environment by using AWS IoT Core, a fully managed service, for the connection environment of construction equipment to support stable services and global business expansion.
AWS IoT Greengrass is key to the smartification of construction equipment.
Device sensors are increasing, and it is easy to transmit sensor data to the Cloud even in unstable communication environments at construction sites. In particular, the ability to independently perform AI/ML linked with the Cloud in a local environment enabled us to implement construction equipment intelligence easily and quickly. The data collected from IoT is connected through Amazon SQS, Lambda, Kinesis, and S3 to a Datalake, and by building a DataMart using AWS Glue and BI Tools, we were able to visualize all real-time equipment data and utilize it in our operations.
Hyundai Construction Equipment performed platform re-architecting in the AWS environment to support existing connected devices of Hi MATE and devices using Greengrass with the help of Megazone Cloud and
AWS Korea, and commercialized it.
The Benefits
In the process of evolving into a smart products and services company, Hyundai Construction Equipment adopted Cloud to respond to customer expectations and the pace of digital environmental change beyond traditional sales and product warranty services. Through this, we accelerated development speed and minimized resource constraints through flexible IT resource operations. Cloud also provided improved collaboration environment effects, as we could see improvements in collaboration speed and scope with partners. Through this, we were able to advance the planned smart construction equipment commercialization by more than 6 months and launch it to the market, establishing a foundation to lead the market, and we were able to meet the security regulations necessary for global business expansion.
